Sneakernet - when your internet service goes out and you have to keep running down the street to another connection until it comes back up.
That’s the position we found ourselves in this week. Just as we were preparing to upload the Santa images from last weekend, our connection failed. I thought it might just be a temporary hiccup, but the next morning it was still out. AT&T told me Wednesday that it could take up to two days to get it repaired. So, the Santa images were delayed. When they got put up, we did not have a complete price sheet attached so people could order. Those things will get fixed on Thursday.
We never knew how connected to the outside world we really were until our connection went out. Sorry for any inconvenience to anyone.
Quick update

Wow. A lot has happened since I last posted. We’ve gotten moved in but not quite settled. We skipped a couple of special events that we normally enjoy. We’ve been swamped with work from all of our schools. Our First Edition orders have been strong, and we’ve hardly had a chance to breathe.
Santa came in and those images are posted in the online proofing area of the website. Downtown Open House is this weekend. Thanksgiving is next week. Christmas on Liberty Square is December 5. The annual “A Christmas to Remember” tour of homes is December 6. Oh yeah, don’t forget the Liberty Art Show begins Saturday and ends Sunday. Check it all out while you are shopping at Downtown Open House. Or, shop while you’re checking out the art show.
We’ve been wanting to put an exhibit in the Liberty Art Show for some time now. We’ve been asked before why we don’t, and the real reason is that we really don’t have anything to display. Most of our work is for other people and of other people. I find that I photograph very little for my own personal use. During the holidays and slow time at the first of the year, I plan to shoot some stuff just for me. I don’t know quite yet what it will be, but I’ve got a few ideas knocking around that might just show up as something interesting next year.
Christmas on Liberty Square
Christmas on Liberty Square is planned for Friday, December 5. Sponsored by the Downtown Organization Of Retailers, Christmas on Liberty Square will have all the vendors lined up in the middle of the street. Patrons will stroll between the businesses on either side of the street and the vendors in the middle. The dance groups will not be at Liberty Square Market. I understand just the high school chorus will be there. Center Stage Dance Academy will be in their new location downtown (the old Citi Financial building) while Quick Steps will be dancing in the old Palmer Hardware building.
We’re doing things different this year also. Santa won’t be in the studio. After he lights the tree at the court house, Santa will remain there for photos, and we’re going to shoot there. We’ll again offer photos with Santa for $5. Prints will be available for pickup on Saturday morning.
Holiday Schedule
For the holidays, we will be closed for Thanksgiving Nov. 26 – Dec. 1. Christmas Holidays will be from Dec. 23 – Jan. 5. We will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009 for a new year.
Change is coming!

Change is indeed coming August 1. It won’t look like much at first, but on August 1, we will be the new owners of First Edition Custom Printing at 641 Liberty Street.
George and Kaye Jones have grown First Edition over the last four years into a great business. They’ve decided to retire “again” and approached us about buying the company. We look forward to continuing to provide First Edition customers with the same high-quality service and personal attention to which they are accustomed.
We are excited about adding the printing business. We will be moving the studio down to 641 Liberty Street after we carve out a camera room. We plan to move production over next week with the studio equipment to follow.
We’ve got a number of press-printed items at the studio, and this move will open up lots of options for your portraits. This move also brings us back to our roots. It was while working as a technical illustrator in the graphics department of a manufacturing company that I began my love of photography, design and publishing.
Lori and I both have printing and publishing backgrounds, and most people don’t know that we’ve produced several print jobs over the past few years. Prior to opening Graphicsmith Studios, we produced football programs, chamber directories and school handbooks with Montee Media in Twin City.
We’ll post more about the move and how things are going as soon as we can.
It was supposed to be just a coat of paint….

It was supposed to be just a coat of paint to spruce up the place. We were planning to replace some furniture items and do a little rearranging.
We’ve got additional plans for the camera room, but the lobby and sales area was supposed to be a snap. Then I started looking behind wall panels and removing lattice and before we knew it, we were pulling all the paneling off the wall and reattaching it before we could paint.
Thursday we were to paint; Friday we were to finish up. We opened the first can of paint about 4 p.m. on Friday. Finally settled on a second color late Friday night.
This has turned into a much larger project than it should have been. Why? All because I couldn’t leave well enough alone.
I shouldn’t be surprised. This happens at the office quite often. We get a good image, and then we want to make it better. Whether it is removing a blemish or a bit more skin softening, the result is taking something good and making it better. Sometimes it takes a bit more time than planned, but the results are worth it.
We’ll be getting the front office in shape during the first part of the week. Production work continues during the sprucing up and the doors are open.
